“The Occult” Is Not What You May Think
Jesus Christ was Known to Many as a Mystic
The word occult comes from the Latin occultus, which simply means "hidden," "concealed," or "secret."
Originally, occult knowledge referred to knowledge that was not readily available to everyone—teachings that were considered hidden because they required study, initiation, or direct experience to understand.
Historically, the occult has included subjects such as:
Mysticism
Sacred geometry
Alchemy
Astrology
Hermetic philosophy
Kabbalah
Symbolism
Meditation
Energy work
Divination
Esoteric teachings
None of those are "evil." They are simply different traditions or methods of exploring reality.
From a spiritual perspective
Many modern spiritual seekers use the word esoteric instead of occult because it carries fewer negative connotations.
Occult = hidden knowledge
Esoteric = inner or deeper teachings intended for those who seek them
Mystical = direct experience of the Divine or ultimate reality
A balanced way to look at it
Whether occult practices are considered beneficial, neutral, or harmful depends largely on one's worldview and intention.
A Christian perspective may caution against many occult practices because they are seen as spiritually risky.
A Hermetic or esoteric practitioner may view them as tools for self-knowledge and understanding universal principles.
A historian would describe the occult as traditions concerned with hidden or esoteric knowledge.
Religion Purposely Hid These Teachings
I believe organized religion has often discouraged the exploration of esoteric knowledge and hidden spiritual teachings, leaving many people dependent on external authority rather than discovering the divine power within themselves.
From my perspective, many of the spiritual principles Jesus demonstrated align with what have historically been called esoteric teachings—practices centered on healing, consciousness, faith, and our direct connection with the Divine. Jesus himself said:
"Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these..." (John 14:12)
